Get some chicory in that coffee, son!

15 Sep

Admission the first:

I prefer drip coffee to espresso coffee.

You need to understand that a statement like that practically revokes my Australian citizenship, and certainly makes me a bad Melbournian. See here’s the thing, nearly all Aussies consider drip coffee to be, well, shit. And the general Aussie consensus is that you can’t get a decent cup of coffee in the entire United States of America.

Admission the second:

My favourite kind of coffee is that which is mixed with chicory.

Again, heretical. Particularly because I drink it black when it’s supposed to be served “au lait”. Traditionally chicory was a cheap coffee substitute, or added to coffee as a filler. Now its sweetly-bitter flavour is the signature taste behind New Orleans coffee blends.

Aside from being super handsome and dreamy, Southern Comfort has other benefits. Like being related to people who own and run the Orleans Coffee Exchange, a specialty coffee company and roastery located in New Orleans. They’re kind of a big deal, supplying coffee and espresso to celebrated NOLA restaurants such as Commander’s Palace, Bayona and Herbsaint. SC and I took some time out from our hectic “barstool tour of Nola” to visit the factory and get a VIP tour.

I think most Melbournians have a decent cache of caffeinated knowledge given the strong Melbourne coffee culture, so I was fortunate to enter the situation armed with a clue. As soon as I walked in, smelled the amazing roasting aroma and saw the Barista training room set up for a cupping, I knew this place was actually serious about coffee. Unlike Starbucks (yeah, I said it).

We walked into the factory section where a fresh batch of beans was about to be released from the roaster.

And we were shown the “container of sharps”, a collection of random items the roasters at OCE have pulled from the bags of raw beans over the years.

Yikes! Aren’t you happy they made the effort to sieve those beans for you?

Aside from a variety of Indonesian, African and South American coffees, including several Fair-Trade options, Orleans Coffee Exchange have several Coffee & Chicory roasts on offer. And the best part? They’re giving me a bag to give away to you fancy people!

pretty label!

Yes, you too can share in my coffee joy! All you have to do is leave a comment on this very blogpost. Could I make it any easier? I think not!

Here’s the official stuff: The coffee giveaway is for US residents only (sorry, it’s too hard to muck around with customs etc). However, in the interest of showing much love to my Aussie readers, if you’re chosen as the winner I’ll be sending you a fabulous Orleans Coffee Exchange tshirt! And really, who does’t love free stuff? Winners will be chosen by a third party random selection generator and then notified by  email.

And if you’re not the lucky recipient, you can still try it out by placing an online order. Too easy!

And if you think it’s hard for an Aussie to find a decent cup of coffee in the states — we hosted an Italian-Australian family who run a coffee shop / cafe in Melbourne. In their third week in the U.S. the dad finally found what he considered a “good” coffee in the North Beach (Little Italy) area of San Francisco. Counting down myself, less than two months to my next trip to Melbourne for the President’s Cup – woohoo!!
